If you follow AI tooling news, you’ve probably heard “MCP” mentioned alongside Claude, Cursor, and the new wave of agentic workflows. Most explanations are either too technical or too vague. Let me give you the developer-level explanation.

What Is MCP?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard created by Anthropic that defines how AI models (like Claude) connect to external tools, data sources, and services.

Think of it as USB-C for AI integrations. Before USB-C, every device had its own connector. Before MCP, every AI integration was custom: you’d write bespoke code to connect your LLM to your database, your file system, your APIs. MCP standardizes the connection layer.

Without MCP:
AI App → Custom Connector A → Database
AI App → Custom Connector B → File System
AI App → Custom Connector C → API

With MCP:
AI App → MCP Client → MCP Server → Database
                    → MCP Server → File System
                    → MCP Server → API

How It Works

An MCP server exposes tools, resources, and prompts to an MCP client (the AI model’s interface). The client can call these tools with structured parameters and receive structured responses.

Here’s a minimal MCP server in Python:

The AI model can now call get_user without you writing a single line of custom integration code for the model side.

Why This Is a Big Deal

1. Write Once, Use Everywhere

An MCP server you build today works with Claude, Cursor, Zed, and any other MCP-compatible client. You’re not locked into one vendor’s SDK.

2. Security Boundary by Design

The MCP server controls exactly what the AI can access. You expose get_user but not delete_user. The AI can’t go rogue and delete your database — it can only call what you explicitly expose.

3. Composable AI Workflows

You can chain MCP servers. Claude can use your database-server, filesystem-server, and github-server simultaneously in a single agentic workflow — without any of them knowing about each other.

Where MCP Is Being Used Today

  • Cursor IDE uses MCP to give Claude context from your codebase
  • Claude Desktop ships with built-in MCP servers for filesystem, web search, and memory
  • Enterprise tools are building MCP servers to give their internal AI access to internal data without sending it to external APIs

  • How to design tool schemas
  • How to expose read-only vs write-capable tools safely
